How to Count Cards at a Blackjack Table

Blackjack card counting is a mathematical system that can help you increase your odds of winning at Blackjack. Experts use this system to decide when to raise or lower their bets.

In Blackjack, a card can either be called a high-value card or a low-value card. See the table below.

Cards Rank
2 to 9 Low
10 to Ace High

On the basis of cards dealt so far, you can calculate if the remaining deck is rich in high-value cards or low-value cards. High-value cards are obviously good for the player as these help getting more 20s and Blackjacks. When you believe the deck contains high-value cards, place bigger bets because your chances of getting a 20 or Blackjack are pretty high.

According to a Blackjack card counter’s point of view, each card carries a positive (+1), negative (-1), or neutral (0) value. The following table lists those values.

Cards Value
2 to 6 (+1)
7 to 9 0
10 to Ace -1

While playing Blackjack, watch carefully each card dealt on the table. Begin your count at 0. Every time a positive card is dealt, add 1 to the count. Subtract 1 from the count each time a negative card is dealt. In case a neutral card is dealt, keep the count as is. If you have a positive count of two or more, place bigger bets. On the other hand, if the count is 0 or negative, place lower bets. Take a look at the following series of cards and try calculating the count.

3-8-A-3-J-2-6-10-5-7

If you see carefully, there are five positive (3-3-2-6-5), two neutral (8-7), and three negative (A-J-10) cards in the above series. If you begin your count at zero, the final count will be +2, which indicates a good time to raise the bet.

Practice counting cards at home before you go ahead to count every Blackjack card dealt on a table. Counting cards is tough. Do not consider yourself ready to count cards at a casino unless you can count an entire deck of 52 cards in 30 seconds or less. Card counting has done wonders for many and it may work the same for you as well.
